What is MPEG – MPEG Full form

The full form of MPEG is the Moving Picture Experts Group . MPEG is an organization that develops standards for encoding digital audio and video. MPEG is a working group of ISO (ISO) to
adopt MPEG video media compression standards globally. Works closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The main MPEG standards include the following

  • MPEG-1: MPEG-1 provides a video resolution of 352×240 at 30 frames per second (FPS). It produces video quality slightly below the quality of traditional VCR video.
  • MPEG-2 : Provides 720×480 and 1280×720 video resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS). This is sufficient for all major TV standards including NTSC, and even HDTV. MPEG-2 is used by DVD-ROM. MPEG-2 can compress 2 hours of video into a few gigabytes. While decompressing an MPEG-2 data stream requires only modest computing power, encoding video in the MPEG-2 format requires significantly more processing power.
  • MPEG-3 : It was designed for HDTV but has not become popular due to MPEG-2 being used more for HDTV.
  • MPEG 4: It is a graphics and video based compression standard based on MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and Apple QuickTime technology.
  • MPEG-7: Formally called Multimedia Content Description Interface , MPEG-7 provides a tool set for fully describing multimedia content.
